ABOUT HOLD’EM FOR LIFE

2017 Event

The 11th Annual Real Estate Industry Hold’em for Life Charity Challenge will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Toronto. The event is a unique evening of fun and friendly competition that will be attended by over 400 top executives from Canada’s leading real estate firms.

This unique and exciting event provides an atmosphere that is particularly conducive to networking.

The evening kicks off with a cocktail reception in the Ritz Carlton Grand Foyer, followed by a night of Texas Hold’em poker played in an authentic Monte Carlo-style atmosphere. Players compete for incredible non-cash prizes and for bragging rights as Hold’em for Life Champion. No experience is required and novices often do as well as experienced players.

CHARITY CHALLENGE

Real Estate Industry

In 2006, the Hold’em for Life Charity Challenge was created as a platform for bringing real estate industry leaders together for a unique evening of entertainment and fundraising.

Hold’em for Life Charity Challenge is an entirely volunteer run non-profit organization that has raised over $28 million to fund cancer research and other initiatives at Mount Sinai Hospital, SickKids Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Princess Margaret Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be directed towards innovative breast cancer research initiatives at Mount Sinai Hospital, to prostate cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital and to Women’s College Hospital. Based on past events, we anticipate that over 85% of funds raised from this year’s event will go directly to cancer research initiatives. This year, in addition to raising funds for cancer research, we have started a fellowship program for young doctors and researchers starting their career, in an effort to keep world-class talent right here in Toronto.

Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are contributing to early detection and a better chance of survival. More people are beating cancer, living longer lives and looking forward to life beyond cancer thanks to fundraising events like the Hold’em for Life Charity Challenge that help fund this innovative care and research.

Proceeds from Hold’Em for Life support a collaborative program at Mount Sinai Hospital, part of the Sinai Health System, of integrated research in breast cancer. Clinical and laboratory scientists will focus on the interface between key patient related factors (hormones, metabolic factors) and the cancer (genes, growth pathways), with a goal to accelerate the development of new therapies that will be clinically useful, with a particular focus on advanced breast cancer where current therapies often fail. The ultimate goal is to enhance the use of a personalized approach that will reduce the risk of metastases developing and lead to more effective treatment of women who develop metastases.

Mount Sinai is home to The Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre, the first dedicated multi-disciplinary breast centre in Canada that today sees approximately 33,000 patient visits annually. Mount Sinai is also the first hospital to have the ability to measure circulating cancer cells in the blood in the clinical setting; these cells can be used to predict outcomes in breast cancer patients.

MESSAGE FROM

DR. PAMELA GOODWIN

Dr. Pamela Goodwin is the Director of Mount Sinai’s Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre, the first dedicated multi-disciplinary breast centre in Canada that today sees approximately 33,000 patient visits annually. Her work focuses on ‘host factors’ — the unique characteristics of each woman — and how those factors might predispose her to developing the disease and alter the clinical course of breast cancer once it has developed. Her pivotal research has drastically changed the current understanding of breast cancer risk. She was the first to show a connection between insulin levels and breast cancer recurrence and is currently leading the largest clinical trial in the world to investigate the use of a commonly used diabetes medication and its potential to improve survival rates for women with early-stage breast cancer.

At The Princess Margaret under the leadership of Dr. Neil Fleshner, and in collaboration with basic, translational, and clinician scientists, a research program has been developed whose major goals are to reduce prostate cancer (PCA) morbidity and mortality by targeting its unique metabolic properties and vulnerabilities.

Over the next 5 years the results of the program’s projects will significantly advance the body of knowledge in understanding the metabolic underpinnings of PCA. It will also have conducted definitive studies that may lead to bringing safe, inexpensive and novel approaches to delay disease progression, and to defining, in a personalized fashion, patient subsets for whom the novel approaches may be of value.
